12 Kaidah untuk Menggunakan Kata Sandang “The”

Ketika menggunakan bahasa Inggris dalam menulis ataupun berbincang, adakalanya kita sering bingung mengenai kapan menggunakan kata sandang the, bukan? Untuk mengatasinya, cara terbaik adalah memahami kaidah-kaidah penggunaan kata sandang tersebut.

1. Untuk menyebut orang, benda, atau hal yang spesifik.
Contoh:

• She need go to the bank, the post office, and the library.
• The cashier gave me to much change.

Jangan gunakan the bersama nama orang. Contoh:

• The Mr. Yudiono is my boss. (salah)
• Mr. Yudiono is my boss. (benar)

2. Dengan jenis-jenis hiburan.
Contohnya, Yuli loves to go to the opera and the movies.
3. Dengan nama organisasi
Contoh:

• Indra went camping with the Boy Scouts this weekend.
• Dedi joined the army when he graduated from high school.

Namun, jangan gunakan the dengan akronim organisasi. Contoh:

• She works for the UNESCO. (salah)
• She works for UNESCO. (benar)

4. Dengan nama-nama sungai, laut, dan samudera.
Contoh:

• The Ciliwung is the longest river in Jakarta
• I have never seen the Pacific Ocean.

5. Dengan nama-nama negara yang memiliki kata-kata seperti kingdom, republic, atau states.
Contoh:

• She is from the United States
• The People’s Republic of China is the official name of China.

6. Dengan nama-nama negara yang jamak.
Contoh:

• They are from the Netherlands.
• She lives in the Bahamas

7. Saat menyebut pegunungan.
Contohnya: The highest peaks in the Rocky Mountains are often covered in snow, even in summer.
Namun, jangan gunakan the saat menyebut gunung. Perhatikan dua kalimat berikut:

• His dream is to climb the Mt. Everest. (salah)
• His dream is to climb Mt Everest. (benar)

8. Untuk menyebut salah satu jenis tata surya atau galaksi.
Contoh:

• The sun is behind a cloud right now.
• The moon will rise at 8:51 tonight.

Ingat, jangan gunakan the untuk planet. Perhatikan kalimat di bawah ini:

• The Uranus is the eighth planet. (salah)
• Uranus is the eighth planet. (benar)

9. Dengan superlatif.
Contohnya, This is the most expensive home in the world.
10. Dengan kata same ketika dua hal adalah sama atau identik.
Contohnya: I can’t tell the difference between regular and extra spicy fried chicken. They taste the same to me.
11. Untuk membuat sebuah pernyataan umum mengenai sebuah kata benda yang dapat dihitung. Contohnya, The rose is a beautiful flower.
12. Dengan kewarganegaraan.
Contoh:

• The British settled North America.
• The French are famous for excellent cooking.

Namun, jangan gunakan the untuk menyebut bahasa. Perhatikan kalimat-kalimat di bawah ini:

• Spanish is an easy language to learn.
